Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System in 2025.
The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.
Athletes will gain the option to question particular rulings made by the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential interference end of a point.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
